Antiheroics

2/25/2013

Wow, where have I been? I guess I've been using as much my free time as I can possibly devote to getting some games written. But I did want to take some time to pop in here, and rant for a bit about antiheroes/antiheroines.
The concept of the antihero always seem more thrilling to me than your typical hero, as it just feels more heroic. If you truly lack the skill required and you still try and accomplish, the success is so much greater because it never should have happened in the first place. Plus they are much more colorful and have so much more going than what any "regular" hero would have. I prefer them and so the vast majority of my games will have you playing them.

And please don't confuse them with the Byronic Hero. You know, the dark hero whose full of vengeance and killing and all that shit. You won't be Byronic Heroes, because they still have skills and talents that will get them through. That just makes things way too easy, and when games are easy, games are boring. And my intentions are not to bore you.

In order to keep things fun and exciting, a great deal of my games will center around you overcoming your characters flaws, problems, and genuine inability. You should still be able to succeed, and when you do it will be a true moment of joy. You'll just have to work at it a little harder than people who play the boring run-of-the-mill "kill rat/take it's stuff/rinse and repeat" RPGs.

Like let's take a sneak peek at what's coming up in Those Revolting Goblins. You quite literally don't have attributes as you would see in other role-playing games. You have what are called Shortcomings. Let's face it, goblins are not strong, smart, or social creatures. It doesn't mean they can't do those things, it just means that they're not that great at it. So if you need to lift something, you will need to overcome your Weak Shortcoming. But it may be wisest to not try lifting things at all.  Perhaps dupe someone else into it.  Or find some other way under it.  Or avoid it all together, and just punch another player's goblin in the eye because you can.

It doesn't mean goblins are completely useless, all goblins will have a few knacks they're good at. A few tricks up their sleeve, so to speak. (Yes, they may have tricks up there, just not treasure.  Those man-types who kill you to take your stuff...they do it just to feel up your dead bodies.  It's pretty sick, and that's why you don't mind killing "Adventurers", bunch of stinking perverts the lot of them.)  Anywho, it's a very long dark and ugly road to get to the top when you're on the bottom of the food chain.  But you'll need to try, if you want to get there.  And that's what revolts are all about.

Don't even get me started on how short their attention span is though. That's another mechanic entirely.

Those Revolting Goblins -  Free yourselves from slavery!  Keep dirty hands from under your loincloth!  Succeed in the face of your shortcomings!  Lose track of what you're doing! Hey look, a shiny...
